Data Governance Framework

Our client for this engagement was a major Australian university.

Background

Our client wished to better align its privacy and data governance advice, and to define key data governance roles. Our focus was on university teams and personnel using data for analytics purposes, and the goal was to bring a better understanding of key privacy messages to these groups.

Our role

We consulted with data governance, analytics and privacy specialists and allied specialists across the University in order to better understand their current maturity. We looked at equivalent frameworks deployed by Australian universities, and at any prevailing standards that could be leveraged for our purposes.  The drafting and development phase was iterative with regular check-ins with our client to ensure we were hitting the mark with regard to the key messages.

What we did

We drafted a suite of standards and guidelines on:

  • data governance roles and their responsibilities
  • data lifecycle
  • data minimisation
  • data retention and de-identification.

We also delivered an eLearning module for more general consumption on how to collect, use and store data in ways that reduce the privacy risk to the University.
